Bill Dettmer is author of Goldratt's Theory of Constraints (ASQ Quality Press, 1997) and Breaking the Constraints to World-Class Performance (ASQ Quality Press, 1998), Strategic Navigation (ASQ Quality Press, 2003), and Brainpower Networking Using the Crawford Slip Method (Trafford, 2003). Co-author (with Eli Schragenheim) of Manufacturing at Warp Speed (CRC St. Lucie Press, 2000).

The Logical Thinking Process 5 step approach outlines:

1.
What are we trying to achieve? - The Intermediate Objectives Map establishes a Goal-Critical Success Factor-Necessary Condition hierarchy as a benchmark for assessing change.

2.. What is the challenge ?
The Current Reality Tree reveals the critical root causes of undesirable system outcomes and identifies the constraint preventing improved performance.

3.
What do we DO about it ?
Evaporating Clouds identify and resolve overt and hidden conflict perpetuating root causes of undesirable outcomes.

4. How do we make it happen ?
The Future Reality Tree structures a “master change plan,” verifying that proposed solutions will work before resources are invested in them. It identifies possible adverse consequences of proposed solutions and ways to prevent them.

5. How do we make it happen ?
The Prerequisite Tree reveals obstacles to execution of the change plan, creates ways around the obstacles, and time-sequences all execution actions.
Execution/Change Management provides guidance on managing decision-maker expectations and overcoming resistance to change.
